Mod talking here, this update here is important to me because I do honestly get bothered by the fact that a few people still don’t consider Diane an original character. Yes I know she started off as just one of the clones from the episode “Too Many Pinkie Pies” and technically that means I’m just taking a character from the show and expanding on her which from a first glance is not much different from how somebody expands on Twilight on a Twilight blog, but it is. Diane has grown a lot since that first post, I’ve worked very hard at making sure she has developed her own personality, and in my mind she has.
I have often commissioned people to draw Diane in the past, and usually the first comments from other people are just “Hey look! It’s nerdy Pinkie Pie!”, which honestly kind of hurts. There was even one occasion when somebody drew some fanart using Diane’s design thinking she was just Pinkie with a different outfit and hairstyle. On top of that on the rare occasion where I visit derpibooru Diane is just labeled as “Diane” putting her with the rest of the depictions of “Pinkamenia Diane Pie” as opposed to “OC: Diane”.
This was the main reason why the color change happened, though there is an in-universe explanation which will be revealed in an upcoming storyline. Diane might see herself as just another copy but that’s no reason for everybody else to think the same.
