Hi folks. Joey Waggoner here, a cartoonist who makes comics in the style of classic cartoons if you didn’t know.
Well it’s been a long time coming, but I finally updated my Patreon page. For those of you who don’t know what Patreon is (and to those people I have to ask, how did you manage not to find out about it all this time?), Patron is a website that allows fans to donate money to their favorite content creators. Kind of like Kickstarter, but for a longer running project. It’s basically like an online tip jar. You put in what amount of money you would like to donate to the creator of your choice (as much or as less as you want) and later on Patreon charges you that amount and sends it to the creator. Now in some cases Patreon pages charge money whenever they post new content (Like when somebody posts a new video or full length animation), but others (like me) charge monthly so you will only get charged the amount you pledge once a month.
However what separates this from a normal tip jar is that on Patreon creators can give you rewards for pledging, and the more you pledge the more rewards you get.
Recently I gave my rewards a bit of an update here’s some of the rewards I have on my Patreon page:
If you pledge $1, you’ll get special news announcements about blogs, upcoming comics, and anything else I’m working on before anyone else and you’ll get to see the comics before they’re posted to the public.
If you pledge $5, you’ll not only get the $1 rewards but also excess to bonus artwork and comics available for patrons as well as work-in-progress sneak peeks and behind the scenes looks of upcoming comics (including some stuff that might never be publicly posted).
If you pledge $15, you’ll get the above rewards plus I will send you a zip file of my various convention prints (without watermarks) through email.
Pledge $25 and you’ll get the $1-$15 patron rewards plus I’ll draw any of your OCs hugging Diane from The Clone That Got Away (In a “Your Character Here” type of drawing) (Patrons can request another drawing of a character hugging Diane after three months of pledging).
And if you Pledge $30, $70, or $100, you’ll get the $1-$15 patron rewards and be able to make an art request from me. Originally I only gave one option per pledge (like for example $30 patrons could only request a color character drawing for example), but now each pledge has several options for art requests, and the $70 and $100 ones have even more complex options including full comic strips and comic book pages.
Now I would like to take the time to answer some questions people might have about the Patreon.
1. Does this mean you’ll be charging folks to view your regular comics?
No, most of my comics will still be posted for the public to view for free. The bonus artwork and comics for the $5 patrons will mostly be sketches and one-shot stuff not connected to any of my current series.
2. The art request prices for patrons seem a bit higher than the normal commission prices for the options listed. Why is that?
First off you’ll not only be getting an art request but also all of the other Patreon perks. Second, currently I don’t always have open slots for commissions open, however with this I can guarantee that no matter how busy I am, you will get another art request from me every month you pledge.
3. How come the slots for the $25-$100 have limited slots?
This is because I’m often busy with my life (mainly college) so I can’t devote all of my time to making artwork (sadly) and I want to make sure that I have enough time to work on the rewards for Patreons without promising what I’m unable to handle. Maybe if a time comes when I’m not as busy I can open more slots (or if one reward option is more popular I can take away some from the others to make it available to more people).
So in conclusion if you can please donate to my Patreon, even one dollar a month would be a big help. However if you are unable to donate, but still want to help out, then reblog this post to help spread the word. That would be a great help to.
Taking a short break from the story to post this little drawing. I drew this because I’ve noticed a lot of MLP ask blogs have been calling it quits lately (At least the ones I follow). I can understand why the mods have stopped, sometimes interests change, people want to try newer ideas, or sometimes people just run out of ideas. It’s perfectly understandable and I’m certainly not gonna try to force anybody to continue when they don’t want to, though it has been a little discouraging I won’t lie.
It’s normal for a show or franchise to loose a little popularity after a few years, I’ve seen it happen with other shows before this, Pokemon, SpongeBob, and Avatar for example. However these shows are still well remembered and still have loyal fans.
Earlier today while I was out I overheard a few people talking about MLP and one person said “I think the fad of being a brony has died out”. What bothered me about what the person said was that he thought that MLP fans were only fans of the show because it was popular to be a fan, like it was some kind of easy gate to popularity just to say you like the show rather than being a fan because you enjoy it. It was never like that for me, I was a fan since day one, and I would have been a fan even if the show didn’t become popular. I never drew MLP stuff just because it was popular, I did it out of a genuine love of the series. It just so happened that a lot of people liked what I liked.
I never became a Pony fan because it was the popular thing to do, I’m a fan because I enjoy the stories and lighthearted humor, I love the relatable characters, and I am amazed by the fantastic world and lore that the show and fans play around in.
Basically I drew this to let my followers know I’m not shutting down this blog anytime soon. There are too many stories I have in mind for Diane and crew to stop now.
I also drew this for the other MLP ask blogs that are still around, to let those mods know that they aren’t alone. If there are any Pony mods out there feeling discouraged about the other Pony blogs calling it quits, I suggest drawing your character saying “I’m still here” as a way of comforting your fans and showing to other mods that you aren’t alone.
I’m still here and I aint getting off this pony ride anytime soon.
